We happened upon the stunning Sycamore for this staircase from a tree cut down by the power company in Carmel Valley and left for the homeowner to discard. We salvaged the massive log, milled it on our mill, and dried the slabs in our solar kiln. The tones of the finished Sycamore perfectly blended with the existing trim of this historic home in Carmel-by-the-Sea. This project provided another complex design challenge to create a rise up to a children’s reading nook without taking up too much floor space in the room. We were able to achieve the concept through highly detailed work using CAD to create a model of the staircase and translating that to hand-form each piece and hand-sculpt the railing into pleasing curves inspired by the Matisse-themed wallpaper. The entire staircase is made from a single log and finished with our signature natural hard wax oil to bring out the vibrancy of the wood’s color and grain.
